Published in 1759, Candide is considered Voltaire's masterpiece. His sharpest criticism against nobility, the church and the all kinds of oppression, cruelty and unjustness appears in this work. Its central theme is the problem of evil and the critique of such optimistic rationalists as Alexandre Pope and Leibniz who are represented by Candide's mentor pangloss.
